The Nutrient Export Risk Matrix (NERM) for strategic application of biosolids to agricultural land

چکیده
Diffuse phosphorus (P) export from biosolids application to agricult ural land above specified soil P thresholds or incidental losses of nutrients applied as manure or fertilizers during high risk periods, may be linked to deteriorating surface or groundwater quality. However, oui research suggests that not all land has an equal risk of contributing diffuse contaminants to receiving waters, either via surface or groundwater delivery routes, and that high risk is associated with critical source areas of diffuse pollution where source and transport risks coincide. We report the initial output from a res earch programme examining the environmental risk of biosolids recycling to agricultural land, which is being synthesized into a risk advice matrix: the Nutrient Export Risk Matrix or NERM for end-users in the water industry. The intention is that the NERM will help determine the most appropriate form and frequency of spatially-sensitive biosolids application to land to achieve sustainable biosolids management without detriment to the environment and receiving water quality, whilst being of net benefit to land managers.

IBI White Paper: Pyrolysis and Gasification of Biosolids to Produce Biochar
Introduction The need to dispose of human-generated waste streams is growing in line with the expansion of urban population centers. This is particularly true for the byproducts of wastewater treatment. According to the US EPA, there are over 7 million dry tons of biosolids (stabilized sewage sludge) produced per year in the US. In 2004, 49% of biosolids were beneficially used—primarily for agr...

MILLIONS of dry tons of biosolids are produced every year. Recycling of them and the safety of disposal is an issue at the center of a national debate. Due to the nutrient content of biosolids, they can be reused beneficially as a soil amendment on numerous areas, such as parks, forests, and agricultural land [41]. Biosolids can also be sold in bulk to consumers for use on home gardens or lawns...

The term, biosolids, is generally used to refer to those waste products that have been stabilized by treatment of the sewage sludge for beneficial reuse through appropriate management (Davis, 2002). The agronomic and environmental benefits from the organic material and fertilizing elements contained in the biosolids are essential for maintaining soil fertility. This has been a major reason for ...

Deep-row application of biosolids on reclamation sites is a unique alternative method of land application that solves many of the problems associated with surface application techniques. When combined with the growth of nitrogen-demanding hybrid poplar trees, it provides a natural recycling system that utilizes nutrients on-site, produces forest products and wildlife habitat, and reduces erosio...

Treated municipal sewage sludge ("biosolids") and dairy cattle slurry (DCS) may be applied to agricultural land as an organic fertiliser. This study investigates losses of nutrients in runoff water (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)), metals (copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr)), and microbial indicators of pollution (total and faecal coliforms) arising fro...
